Minecraft basics.

As the title says, I will be teaching the basics of Minecraft. It's very easy game, you just have to know the basics before you start playing in multiplayer. If you don't know basics and you start playing multiplayer, you'll be asking for help every 3 seconds. I know there are many tutorials on Youtube, but many of my friends in Steam and IRL have started playing, so I'm making this. I suggest new players to read all of this.

So yeah, here we go.

1. You have generated a new world. First thing you do is, gather wood. Go cut wood with your hand. You have to make wooden tools to mine better materials to make better tools. I'll show you.

Press I after you've gathered at least 1 wood block, you will craft 4 wooden planks. There's no other use for the Wood, only wooden planks have use. Don't get confused, when people say wood, they probably mean planks.

You just simply place it on 1 of the 4 blocks:

With 4 planks, you have to make a crafting table/box. Without that you can't make tools.
Here's how you craft it:

You place the crafting box on the ground and press Mouse 2 on it. You will get a 3 wide 3 high blocks crafting thing.
Here's the crafting box:

Now, let's get ready to craft.
Sticks. First you need sticks to make tools, here's how you them:

Shovel. With shovel, you can destroy faster "soft" blocks, such as dirt, gravel and sand.

Pickaxe. With pickaxe, only with pickaxe you can mine "hard" materials, such as stone, sandstone, coal, etc. Actually you can destroy any block without pickaxe, but you don't get anything, the block just disappears. With Pickaxe you can gather the material and make new stuff out of it.

Axe. With axe, you can cut trees faster.

Sword. With sword you can obviously do more damage to mobs. It really has no other use.

Here's how many uses each materials have:

Wood: 60 Uses
Stone: 132 Uses
Iron: 251 Uses
Gold: 33 Uses
Diamond: 1562 Uses
As you can see, I don't recommend you to make golden tools, they are worse than wood tools.

Now, since we have crafted a pickaxe, let's get ready to mine.

So here we have some Stone:

With stone you can make same tools as wood.

Iron. For iron, you need Stone pickaxe to mine it.

Those are the main materials. Now for the real thing.

HOW TO SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT

You have to make a house. The house can't be too big, because you have only 10 minutes before the night comes. House can be made of dirt, wood, sand, any nearby materials you can find. Just make sure that mobs can't get in.
Here's some examples of a starting house:

If you have trees near you, you can use your imagination:

After the house is done, you can craft a chest. You can storage your items there, if you die, the items you have put there will stay there.
By placing 2 chests side by side, you will get a double chest. In multiplayer, I suggest you to hide your chests, at least the most valuable ones. There are bitches that might steal your stuff. :]

Coal. Coal is very important material too. You can find it on every level, mountains, caves, even at the bottom of the map.

You need coal to make torches:

Torches light up at night, and monsters can't spawn near the torch. And it's good to have some lightning in the night. It's very dark.

coal is the best "fuel" for the furnace. ( Bucket of lava is an exception, you can smelt up to 100 blocks. You will lose the bucket while doing that. ) 1 coal can smelt 8 blocks. Here's how you make a furnace:

OTHER USEFUL TIPS

- Creepers, do not mess with them.
- If you find a cave, take food, weapons and torchers.
- DO NOT DIG STRAIGHT DOWN
- Try to avoid digging up in a cave, if you must dig up, make sure you keep a torch above your head at all times, the torch will block sand or gravel blocks from falling over you. Digging up is sometimes the best thing to do if you get lost in a cave. ( I might have forgotten to mention that Gravel blocks and Sand blocks have gravity, meaning they fall down if they have space to fall ).
- Don't mess with lava in a bucket, you might cause a wildfire.
- Try to make your starting house near spawn or some landmarks to your house, if you die, you can go back and collect your items. If you happen to die in a cave when falling down into lava, you won't get your items back.
- If you don't need any materials from agressive mobs ( String, Gun powder, Bones or arrows), I suggest you to stay inside the whole night. You can get the same materials except gun powder when night turns day, the mobs burn from the sunlight.
- Creepers will not die from the sunlight, they are still agressive... Creepy bastards.
- Spiders will not die from sunlight, they turn passive, which means that they won't attack you, unless you attack them.
- Day lasts about 10 minutes.
- Night lasts from 7 minutes to 7 and half minutes.
- Smelting logs, more like.. burning ( not planks ) will create charcoal. It won't stack with normal coal, but it acts the same way.
- Spiders can climb.

Minepedia is huge, there's no such a thread as "how to survive your first night". :P I told people to go to Minepedia, they still come up asking what to do.

You need to put fuel into the bottom slot of the furnace.
I guess this could help you.

He mentioned it, you can use Coal, Wood or Lava in a bucket.

Put one of the above in the furnace, and select the item you wish to smelt.
